James Gunn taps Ben Affleck to direct a DC movie

December 15, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

It’s almost Christmas and DC are the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to their much-publicised restructure. Yesterday we had the disappointing news that Henry Cavill’s turn to wear the cape had passed, but it was better news for his Justice League buddy Ben Affleck, who has been tapped to direct a future intallment of the DCEU when James Gunn finds “the right project”.

Gunn took to Twitter to answer a series of questions regarding his and Peter Safran’s new-look DC slate, and revealed that he’d met with Affleck because the Argo director had been keen on finding a project to helm in the DCEU.

Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project. https://t.co/Haz1APdlVN

Affleck was originally set to don the cape and cowl and direct what would eventually become Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and has spoken about his desire to take charge of a DC movie before, so  it makes sense that he’d still be in-and-around the Warner Bros. think-tank, even at a time when they seem to be jettisoning everything associated with the Snyderverse.

While we’re still due an appearance from his Batman in next year’s controversy dogged solo-outing of The Flash, Affleck hasn’t directed a film since 2016’s Live By Night, but before that landed the triple-whammy of Gone Baby Gone (2007), The Town (2010), and the Academy Award winning Argo (2012).

Affleck’s next film is Air Jordan, which he will star in alongside Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Jason Bateman and Chris Tucker in a story about shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro, and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of sports: Michael Jordan.
