Thomas Brodie-Sangster and David Thewlis are The Artful Dodger and Fagin for Disney+ Dickens series

December 1, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

With Disney+ subscribers constantly asking “please sir, can I have some more” when it comes to streaming content, the studio have turned to the character who coined that phrase and set about making a period drama based on the classic Charles Dickens story of Oliver Twist.

However, instead of focusing on the titular orphan, the series will follow Jack Dawkins, aka The Artful Dodger, who will be played by The Queen’s Gambit star Thomas Brodie-Sangster, alongside David Thewlis as the fingerless glove wearing, street-urchin overlord Fagin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter they will be joined by Australian actor Maia Mitchell (The Fosters) who will star as Lady Belle Fox.

The Artful Dodger will have an antipodean twist to it, with Disney revealing that it will be a character-driven drama set in 1850s Australia, where Dodger is living a double life as a surgeon who still can’t shake his predilection for crime. In a statement the Mouse House said “From high-octane heists to life-and-death surgeries, glittering parties to colourful streets, this series is a rock ’n’ roll tale with an Aussie connection.”

The eight-episode series will be overseen by Jeffrey Walker (Jack Irish, Modern Family) and is expected to launch on Disney+ sometime in late 2023.
