Glen Powell gives an update on his Leonardo DiCaprio-produced Captain Planet movie

January 11, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Fresh from taking to the skies in both billion dollar blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick and biographical drama Devotion, Glen Powell has been speaking about how he’d love to be among the clouds once again, especially the smog-filled kind, for his long gestating Captain Planet movie.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, in which Powell talks about his high-flying 2022, and the roles to which he has been linked, he was asked about penning a Captain Planet movie (go to 6.20 in the accompanying video), to which he responded that the rights were now with Warner Bros. and that they were figuring out “what universes they need and what they don’t need”.

“I think those conversations will be happening shortly… a superhero, a green-mulleted, blue-skinned, superhero that saves the world from polluters…I know DiCaprio is super passionate about it, I’m super passionate about it. I think it could be great. Try to get as much excitement about it. I want that one to work. I’d love to play that superhero.”

As far back as 2013 Sony were looking to develop a movie based on Captain Planet and the Planeteers, but the rights lapsed and in 2018 ended up in the hands of Paramount Pictures, who teamed with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way in an attempt to put their power rings together for a big screen reboot written by Powell and Jono Matt.

It was reported at the time that their approach to a Captain Planet movie would find Captain a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need them.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran for three seasons between 1990 and 1992, with a follow-up series, The New Adventures of Captain Planet, then running for three more seasons through to 1996.

Let us know what you think of the idea of a Captain Planet movie. Does the thought of hearing that iconic theme song – “Captain Planet, he’s a hero, gonna take pollution down to zero” – belted out by someone like Imagine Dragons get you as excited as Powell for the project?
