Warner Bros. confirms Constantine sequel is still going ahead following the DC Studios shake-up

February 8, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Resurrection is a key theme of Constantine, but having fought for so long to get a sequel to the 2005 supernatural thriller greenlit, fans might have been worried that following the DC shake-up, the return of Keanu Reeves’ John Constantine might once-again have been sent spiralling back into the flames of development hell. Well you can throw holy water on such thoughts for now, because Warner Bros. have confirmed that Constantine 2 is not being scrapped.

With rumours beginning to emanate from the depths of hell that Constantine 2 might not be in the plans of new DC Studio Heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the sequel is still happening.

Constantine starred Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf and Tilda Swindon in an adaptation of Alan Moore and Stephen R. Bissette’s Hellblazer comics. Upon release in 2005 it received middling reviews but grossed $230 million at the worldwide box-office at a time when the multiplexes weren’t dominated by comic-book movies.

Over time the film has been reappraised, with both Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) stoking the fires of interest during numerous interviews, before it was eventually announced in 2022 that the duo would be returning.
