Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins releases poster and delays kick off until November

April 13, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Taika Waititi’s football-comedy Next Goal Wins has been warming up on the sidelines for a few years now. Shot way back in 2019, the adaptation of the 2014 documentary of the same name suffered a career-threatening injury when the Armie Hammer controversy struck and forced reshoots, before kick-off was once again delayed from April 2023 to September of this year.

Searchlight Pictures now appear to have settled on a release date and they’ve dropped a poster to celebrate the fact that Next Goal Wins will finally arrive in cinemas on November 17. Check it out below…

Based on Steve Jamieson and Mike Brett’s utterly delightful Next Goal Wins documentary, Waititi’s film tells the pre-Ted Lasso true story of the American-Samoa national team’s efforts to quality for the World Cup as the lowest-ranked team in world football, who hire down-on-his-luck American coach Thomas Rongen (played by Michael Fassbender) following a 31-0 loss to Australia.

Co-written by Waititi and The Inbetweeners Iain Morris, Next Goal Wins also features an impressive roster of actors that include Oscar Kightley, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, Kamaina, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi, Semu Filipo, Uli Latukefu, and Rachel House.

Let us know whether you’re looking forward to seeing Waititi return to his independent filmmaking roots following his Marvel movies, and if you think Next Goal Wins will be worth waiting for by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
