The Duffer Brothers announce Stranger Things final season postponement

May 8, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Acting in solidarity with the WGA’s writer’s strike, The Duffer Brothers will not start filming Stranger Things Season 5.

Executive producers and showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer broke the news in a new tweet that supported the WGA’s current writer’s strike.

They tweeted, “Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong.”

Check out the tweet below…

Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong

Reports say that filming on the episodes was initially slated to start shortly, while the script has been worked on since last summer. At the time of writing, there’s been no new set release date.

Stranger Things Season 5 is the final season of the beloved Netflix series, marking the closing act of a story that began in 2016. The fourth season was the most streamed series of 2022 and launched the show into an even higher stratosphere than ever before.

While this fifth and final season delay can be problematic, the Duffers will likely want to make sure the project is as strong as can be, and they know they need writers to make that happen. The New York Times recently quoted someone saying the strike is “going to be a while.”
