Bill Skarsgård eyed for title role in Swamp Thing

June 9, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Bill Skarsgård has played Pennywise The Clown in one of cinema’s best transformations, but his next project could put him in an even more transformative role.

The Hot Mic’s Jeff Sneider broke the news that Skarsgård is in talks for the lead role in Swamp Thing. James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) has been long-rumored to direct the film, with Peter Safran and James Gunn producing.

Skarsgård is fresh off his role in John Wick Chapter 4 and will soon play the titular vampire role in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu and the titular anti-hero in The Crow. The actor is known for diving deep into parts, playing strange and often chilling roles. His off-putting aesthetic & and unconventional good looks make him an unlikely leading man, but he has found success with his underlining charm. All of that will serve well in the role of Alec Holland, aka Swamp Thing!

Little is known about the project, but it will be part of James Gunn’s “Gods & Monsters” DC Universe relaunch. The film “investigates the dark origins of Swamp Thing.” Gunn also notes the Swamp Thing film will be “a much more horrific film” than other DC Studios projects, but “we’ll still have Swamp Thing interact with the other characters.”

Swamp Thing has no set release date but will come sometime after the launch of Superman: Legacy on July 11, 2025.
