Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga will receive third film Dune: Messiah

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are not backing out of the spice business anytime soon as Dune 3 is on the way.

It’s been confirmed by multiple sources that the third installment is set to be an adaptation of Dune: Messiah. Denis Villeneuve is set to return as director, completing his first cinematic trilogy.

While the studio has not officially confirmed the news, rumors have swirled for quite some time, and Deadline recently noted the third film in their recent Dune: Part Two trailer coverage.

Dune 3 will continue the saga and is expected to be co-written by Villeneuve and screenwriter Jon Spaihts. The planned film will look at the second in Frank Herbert’s Dune series of six novels published in 1969, a direct sequel to Dune.

Dune Messiah has only been adapted oncee previously, in the 2003 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries titled Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune. which starred Alec Newman as Paul Atreides and James McAvoy as his son Leto II. Villeneuve previously spoke of his desire to adapt the book back in 2021 following the release of the first movie.

Dune: Part Two will hit cinemas this November while the spinoff prequel series Dune: The Sisterhood is coming to Max in 2024.

The highly-anticipated sequel continues Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s acclaimed bestseller Dune with returning and new stars, including Timothée Chalamet (Wonka), Zendaya (Euphoria), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Josh Brolin (Milk), Austin Butler (Elvis), Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Léa Seydoux (Crimes of the Future), Stellan Skarsgård (Mamma Mia), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), and Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men).

Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Dune: Part Two is out on November 3rd, 2023.
