Chevy Chase roasts his time on Community, says he didn’t like being surrounded by “those people”

September 28, 2023 by EJ Moreno

If there’s one thing you can say about Chevy Chase, he has quite the mouth on him. Whether used for comedy or roasting cast members of a former TV series, we’ll always get candid takes from Chase.

His latest podcast is no different, with the longtime comic going in on one of his biggest hits.

While appearing on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, the ever-outspoken actor held nothing back regarding trashing Community.

Chase tells Maron on the podcast, “I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately. I felt a little bit constrained.” Chase adds, “Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good. It just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me. I didn’t mind the character. I just felt that it was…I felt happier being alone.”

For the actor, the real issue seemed to stem from the cast or crew, adding, “I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.”

Chase played Pierce Hawthorne for 83 episodes across four seasons before he was fired from the show after reportedly using a slur on set. Since then, his former co-stars have been vocal about their time with Chase on the set. When asked on the podcast if he was “hard to work with,” Chase explains: “I don’t think people really felt that way. I don’t know what my reputation was among people. I just always assumed I was okay.”

Community is set to return for a film coming to Peacock. Dan Harmon and co-writer Andrew Guest had almost finished a script, and with the WGA strike over, expect some movement.

Community originally starred the likes of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, and Ken Jeong. Reports say most are set to return for the film, including Glover, who left the series due to on-set behavior.
