Tim Burton on seeing Superman Lives realised in The Flash: “I’m in quiet revolt against all this”

September 19, 2023 by EJ Moreno

As we move further away from The Flash, it seems like everyone wants to address the polarizing film. Now, we are seeing Tim Burton throw in two cents, which makes sense as multiple of his most iconic DC-related projects were used.

We all know the film had the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, which was set to have a much more expansive role in the DC Universe in the future, but there’s also a canceled DC movie from Burton that was featured in the multiverse-crashing scene in the film’s final act.

Burton sat down for a Zoom chat with the BFI, which led to discussing one of his biggest “what ifs” situations: Superman Lives.

“No, I don’t have regrets,” states Burton, saying that the time away from the project has slightly changed his perspective. “I will say this: when you work that long on a project, and it doesn’t happen, it affects you for the rest of your life. Because you get passionate about things, and each thing is an unknown journey, and it wasn’t there yet. But it’s one of those experiences that never leaves you a little bit.”

We also see the filmmaker throw a little shade at The Flash without directly addressing it, adding: “This is why I think I’m over it with the studio. They can take what you did, Batman or whatever, and culturally misappropriate it, or whatever you want to call it. Even though you’re a slave of Disney or Warner Brothers, they can do whatever they want. “So in my latter years of life, I’m in quiet revolt against all this.”

Tim Burton is looking to move things in a practical direction for his next project, even if he’s dipping back into the nostalgia well. Burton will return with Beetlejuice 2 next year, starring the returning Michael Keaton as the titular ghoul. The film has reportedly done its best to keep the feeling of the original, even with new additions like Jenna Ortega. The release of Beetlejuice 2 is currently set for September 6, 2024.

As for The Flash, the film featuring Burton’s take on Batman (and his unreleased Superman), is currently streaming on Max.
