Beetlejuice 2 cinematographer on the sequel’s practical effects: “What you see in the film is very much in-camera”

September 4, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Beetlejuice 2 is looking to bring filmmaking back to when practical effects ran the industry. Tim Burton’s return to one of his most iconic spooky works is shaping up to be quite the visual delight.

Cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos, while promoting Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting in Venice, spoke to Collider about Beetlejuice 2 and described what it was like lensing the project.

The filmmaker notes, “[W]e certainly are shooting things in-camera and for real. That’s part of the charm. I mean, he’s a great filmmaker in that respect. He’s both a visionary and a very classical filmmaker at the same time.”

He adds, “We did a lot of that on Haunting in Venice as well. What you see in the film is very much in-camera. So, yes, I think I enjoyed that aspect of the filmmaking of these last two films I’ve made. I think I’ve enjoyed immensely that reliance on practical techniques.”

Zambarloukos says all of this helps immerse the actors into the project, “I think you get a very, very different kind of performance out of actors when things are done in-camera, and I think you get a very different audience reaction out of in-camera effects.”

The sequel sees the return of Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, alongside newcomers Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Justin Theroux.

Beetlejuice 2 is set for release on September 6th, 2024.
