The Nightmare Before Christmas director on a potential sequel: “It might be more interesting to do a prequel”

October 16, 2023 by EJ Moreno

If you’re like me, we’ve wanted to revisit the magical world of Halloweentown and see our favorite Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington, again. But how do the filmmakers behind Nightmare Before Christmas feel about a sequel?

Well, director Henry Selick dove into that as he spoke about the 30th anniversary of the iconic Disney film, with People asking if he’d helm a follow-up to the iconic 1993 film. Selick notes that he’s hesitant, but it’s not just him, producer Tim Burton agrees.

Selick tells the outlet that Nightmare Before Christmas is “a perfect movie [that] came out of the perfect time, only to grow into something far bigger over the years.”

“I think Tim, in particular, feels like, why mess with that?” states Selick. “He certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel. He has had so many other successes, and so far, nobody’s come up with a great idea for a sequel. And I still think that Tim gets to decide. I don’t think there’s any idea that would convince him.”

He does add, “It might be more interesting to do a prequel,” Selick says. “There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloweentown.”

During the same interview, actor Chris Sarandon would “absolutely” be on board to reprise his speaking role as Jack Skellington.

How do you feel about a sequel to Nightmare Before Christmas, or do you want an origin story of how Jack found his way to becoming a Halloween icon?
