Zack Snyder wants to see a young James Bond: “There has to be something there”

December 24, 2023 by EJ Moreno

With the release of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, Zack Snyder is back and able to offer us one of his hot takes again – and the filmmaker might be right about shaking up a franchise this time.

Speaking to The Atlantic recently, Snyder opened up about various topics, including James Bond and the state of the 007 franchise. While he has no plans on stepping behind the camera for a Bond film, he does offer a unique idea in his pitch.

“It’d be cool to see, like, 20-year-old James Bond. The humble roots that he comes from. Whatever trauma of youth that makes you be able to be James Bond. There has to be something there,” says the filmmaker.

At the time of writing, the youngest actor to play Bond was George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, who was only 29. Every other actor has been either mid-30s or older when first taking on the role, with the latest actor to play the iconic spy, Daniel Craig, being 38 when he film Casino Royale.

Snyder is no stranger to skirting around source material, and that’s what would have to happen here. Fleming’s novels follow Bond when he is an experienced spy and has served in the Royal Navy. But this new era of Bond will need to shake things up even further than before to stay relevant.

While Zack Snyder will likely never helm a 007 movie, one of his close friends, Christopher Nolan, has long been rumored for the gig. Nolan already stated that he’s open to more franchises like Bond, and with Oppenheimer being a box office juggernaut and a major awards contender, the Bond universe could use that.

After crash landing on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmers. But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) – leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld.

Tasked with finding fighters who would risk their lives to defend the people of Veldt, Kora and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a tenderhearted farmer naive in the realities of war, journey to different worlds in search of the Bloodaxes, and assemble a small band of warriors who share a common need for redemption along the way: Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot and gun for hire; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a legendary commander; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a master swordswoman; Tarak (Staz Nair), a captive with a regal past; and Milius (E. Duffy), a resistance fighter. Back on Veldt, Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins), an ancient mechanized protector hiding in the wings, awakens with a new purpose. But the newly formed revolutionaries must learn to trust each other and fight as one before the armies of the Motherworld come to destroy them all.

The cast of Rebel Moon includes Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Rhian Rees, Jena Malone, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, and Staz Nair.

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire theatrical cut is in cinemas and on Netflix now.
