Ryan Coogler set to produce Prince musical

March 23, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Prince solidified himself as one of the greatest artists ever by taking the music world by storm. Now, his work will be immortalized in a new film.

Initially reported by InSneider and confirmed by Deadline, filmmaker Ryan Coogler has boarded an untitled Prince music-inspired film at Universal Pictures.

Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian are producing, and Rebecca Cho will executive produce through Proximity Media. Jody Gerson, CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group, will also produce.

Little is known about the project besides that it will be centered around Prince’s music, and Bryan Edward Hill (Titans) wrote a previous draft of the film.

While there’s never been a direct biopic or musical based on Prince before, the musician’s iconic music has been featured in multiple films that he was involved with. Purple Rain is one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time, and his film work, like Under The Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge, featured hit albums attached to them. 1984’s rock musical Purple Rain is celebrating its 40th anniversary this July.

At the time of writing, Universal Pictures has not confirmed a director or cast for this project.
