The Black Phone has been one of the success stories of 2022. In a box-office landscape still fluctuating following the pandemic, Scott Derrickson’s creepy horror has managed to dial into $152 million at the worldwide box-office, and so it’s no surprise to learn that conversations have already begun regarding a sequel.
To coincide with The Black Phone‘s home entertainment release, even though it still managed to earn over $1M at the domestic box-office this past weekend, Derrickson was speaking with Comicbook.com about a potential follow-up, saying “There’s already a lot of conversation, a lot of pressure being put on it. I mean, the movie cost $18 million, and it’s going to ultimately make probably $160-170 million worldwide. So they want another one. Of course, they do.”
Based on a short story by Joe Hill, with whom Derrickson had already discussed potential sequel ideas prior to release, The Black Phone is the story of Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy who abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims.
