Aaron Taylor-Johnson talks Quicksilver, East-European accents and being compared to X-Men: Days of Future Past

January 26, 2015 by Luke Owen

We’ve already brought you the two Empire covers for Avengers: Age of Ultron, some images and a few notes from Joss Whedon talking about not directing Avengers: Infinity War and threatening to kill all of the Avengers. And now we bring you some notes from an interview with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who will be playing Quicksilver in the movie.

“He’s very agitated because everything runs too slowly for him,” he tells Empire via CBM. “He’s quick at everything. He’s quick to lose his temper.”

“It’s more about Pietro and Wanda together, a yin/yang where he’s very physical and very protective of her and she’s very internal and always mothering him,” he says on his relationship with Scarlet Witch, played by fellow Godzilla star Elizabeth Olsen. “Pietro doesn’t fucking trust anybody. The only one he cares for and at the end of the day will jump in front of a bullet for is his sister, Wanda.”

“We all wanted to pull it back to the comic book. That’s why we did East European accents,” he adds, confirming rumours that he may adopt an accent for the movie.

This is not the first time Quicksilver will have been portrayed on the big screen. Due to a bizarre loophole in the contracts between Marvel and 20th Century Fox, both parties can use the characters of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch – although Marvel can’t mention that they are the children of Magneto. Quicksilver was on-screen in last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, played by Taylor-Johnson’s Kick Ass co-star Evan Peters.

“That was already out there before I even signed the contract,” he says when asked about the comparison. “If I’d cared that much, I would have said no. It didn’t phase me for one minute. What I knew of it was that Evan Peters’ Quicksilver was set in the ’70s, and it was different. I didn’t watch any of [X-Men: Days of Future Past] while making Avengers, but I did see it recently, and it was fantastic.”

Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release in the UK on April 24th 2015 and North America on May 1st 2015, with Joss Whedon directing a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Paul Bettany (JARVIS / The Vision), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), James Spader (Ultron), Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Strucker), and Josh Brolin (Thanos).
