Adam Driver knew where Kylo Ren’s Star Wars arc was going from the start

January 15, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, says that he has known his character’s arc from the beginning.

One of the accusations thrown Lucasfilm’s way in recent years is that the new sequel trilogy wasn’t planned out, with each director seemingly taking the story where he wants. Adam Driver’s latest comments refute this somewhat, however, as he has revealed that he knew where Kylo Ren’s arc was going right from the start.

Speaking to Deadline, the actor said: “With Star Wars, I had one piece of information of where it was all going, and that’s where it has been in my head for a long time, and things were building towards that. It feels very theatrical, if anything. Because in the plays that I’ve done, a six-month run, on the very last day, you finally feel like, ‘Oh, now I have a better understanding of what it is that I want to do. I wish we could do this all over again.’

“Working on a play, the questions you can ask yourself are infinite, and that’s what’s torturous about film sometimes – you only have one shot to get it right. And you can do a lot of takes, but we’re not all going to get back together again and do this. But for something you’re doing for six years, you still have a chance to go back and make something a little bit more articulated.”

It’s possible that it was J.J Abrams, director of The Force Awakens, who told Driver this piece of information and now that Abrams is back in the director’s chair for Episode IX, the two might possibly be able to see their vision through for Kylo almost as originally planned.

Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Mabeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Keri Russell (The Americans).
