Adrianne Palicki looks back on her failed Wonder Woman TV pilot

October 24, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Five years before Diana Prince made her DC Extended Universe debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. and NBC looked to bring the Amazon Princess back to the small screen with a potential Wonder Woman TV series from David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies).

Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) was cast as in the title role and a pilot was shot in 2011, although it failed to impress executives at the network, who ultimately passed on picking up the project to series. And now, in an interview with EW, Palicki has reflected on her brief flirtation with the iconic DC superheroine:

“It was honestly the scariest thing ever and the best thing ever at the time. Getting to wear that outfit was just a huge dream,” said Palicki. “It was fun for me to get to play three different characters ultimately. I loved that David E. Kelley is really great at writing really strong women, and I found he did that beautifully in all of the different personas. What they all still had [in common] was this beautiful vulnerability of isolation.”

“It was devastating when it didn’t go [to series],” Palicki continues. “It was so big. I feel like maybe if it had been [made] one or two more years [later], it would’ve been a shoo-in.”

In the years following the abandoned Wonder Woman TV show, Palicki went on to star as Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird in ABC and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (along with the unaired spinoff pilot Marvel’s Most Wanted), while The CW also looked to develop another Wonder Woman-based pilot entitled Amazons, although that also failed to get off the ground.

Meanwhile, Gal Gadot got the opportunity to bring Wonder Woman to life on the big screen, appearing in Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman and Justice League. Her next outing – Wonder Woman 1984 – is currently scheduled for release in December, assuming it holds its date given the ongoing global health crisis.
