Alden Ehrenreich on Solo: A Star Wars Story finding new fans on Disney+ and its initial reception

September 20, 2020 by EJ Moreno

When speaking to Total Film, Brave New World actor Alden Ehrenreich candidly opened up about his time as Han Solo on the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“Solo was a three-year experience, all said and done,” says Ehrenreich to Total Film. “I had been away from home pretty much for about three years. And not only on a personal side, but also as an actor and artist – the well’s dry. You haven’t had a whole lot of experience in real relationships with people.”

While he spent time working on the film and even called it “an amazing adventure,” the reaction from the media is what stood out to him as well: “For instance, that movie [Solo], it didn’t do as well as other Star Wars movies, but it still did well for a movie. And so it was kind of this medium thing. But that’s not newsworthy. Even at high-level journalism, there’s an intense pressure, sometimes, it feels like, to catastrophise or celebrate… And I think that’s really fucking dangerous, especially when it pertains to the stuff that really matters, like the state of the world.”

What really stood out in the interview was Ehrenreich speaking on the fact that Solo has seen an uptick in fan interest since finding a home on Disney+. With the fan-backed “MakeSolo2Happen” movement of still going strong, the actor showed his appreciation, adding: “For it to be able to be seen would take a second [viewing]. And I think that’s borne itself out. And it really means a lot, and is wonderful, especially with kids, who are excited about it.”

A new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’Ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Jon Favreau (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Rio Durant, Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) as Dryden Vos and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) as Weazel.
