Alexandre Aja provides an update on the sequel to alligator hit Crawl

May 19, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

While doing the rounds for his Netflix thriller Oxygen (read our ★★★★ review here), Alexandre Aja has been speaking about another of his projects, the alligator action hit Crawl, and providing an update on a potential sequel.

Crawl made over $90M at the worldwide box-office off a $13.5M budget, so a follow-up was always likely, and Aja told Bloody Disgusting‘s The Boo Crew Podcast that they’ve “been talking about a sequel nonstop, and putting together a really, really fun take”.

He explained that he wasn’t too sure whether the sequel would once again focus on Kaya Scodelario’s character, saying “I think the story of Haley is a really strong one, but I believe that Crawl is about nature taking back its due, and kind of like, more hurricane driven, man versus animal. So maybe it will be another story altogether.”  Aja continued “We’re looking for that human story right now, that will be as strong as the one in the first one. To make the second one legit.”

It makes sense for the story to be a different one. You’d really be testing the credulity of the audience if you put Hayley anywhere near alligators again, but then again look what happened to John McClane.
