Amazon cancels The Wheel of Time after three seasons

May 24, 2025 by Ricky Church

In some rather surprising news, Deadline reports that Amazon Studios has decided to cancel The Wheel of Time after three seasons. The Prime Video series was based on Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic spanning over one dozen novels.

The Wheel of Time was Amazon’s first foray into the fantasy genre and proved to be a hit when it premiered in 2021, becoming Prime’s most watched series premiere that year and among its top originals through its second season. Though viewings dipped for its third season, reception among fans of the novels and show was quite high and globally remained very popular. So why the cancellation?

Apparently the cost of producing the series, which remains one of Amazon’s most expensive productions, did not compare to its viewings for the third season to justify a fourth season renewal despite being reportedly well liked by Amazon and Sony TV executives. Deadline notes discussions were held on how Wheel of Time could continue, but they could not find a solution.

In the face of a possible cancellation, the season three finale was apparently “designed to offer some closure” despite the multiple cliffhangers left for several of the characters and Wheel of Time‘s grand story. Given this, it seems unlikely at the moment Amazon and Sony may reverse course or offer a movie finale to give fans definitive closure on the adaptation.

Based on the best-selling Robert Jordan fantasy series The Wheel of Time, a humble farm boy, Rand al’Thor, learns he is The Dragon Reborn—a dangerous figure from history destined to save the world … or break it. The Wheel of Time turns, and the Last Battle approaches.

After defeating Ishamael at the end of Season Two, Rand reunites with his friends at Falme and is declared the Dragon Reborn. But in Season Three, the threats against the Light are multiplying: the White Tower stands divided, the Black Ajah run free, old enemies return to the Two Rivers, and the remaining Forsaken are in hot pursuit of the Dragon… including Lanfear, whose relationship with Rand will mark a crucial choice between Light and Dark for them both. As the ties to his past begin to unravel, and his corrupted power grows stronger, Rand becomes increasingly unrecognizable to his closest allies, Moiraine and Egwene. These powerful women, who started the series as teacher and student, must now work together to prevent the Dragon from turning to the Dark…no matter the cost.

The Wheel of Time stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, Daniel Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Dónal Finn as Mat Cauthon, Ceara Coveney as Elayne Trakand, Kate Fleetwood as Leandrin Guirale, Natasha O’Keefe as Lanfear, Ayoola Smart as Aviendha, Kae Alexander as Min Farshaw, Priyanka Bose as Alanna Mosvani, Taylor Napier as Maksim, Hammed Animashaun as Loial, Meera Syal as Verin Mathwin, Jennifer Cheon Garcia as Leane, Johann Myers as Padan Fain, Jay Duffy as Dain Bornhald, Laia Costa as Moghedien, Isabella Bucceri as Faile Bashere, Olivia Williams as Queen Morgase Trakand, and Shohreh Aghdashloo as Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan.
