Amazon acquires Jurnee Smollett action vehicle Fuel

March 9, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

While Birds of Prey’s disappointing box-office performance means we might not get to see Jurnee Smollett’s wonderful Black Canary again, Amazon Studios are at least making sure that the actor gets to continue playing powerful female action roles with the announcement that they’re in negotiations to acquire Fuel.

Deadline reports that Fuel will be about a getaway driver, and that the Lovecraft Country actor will play the wheel woman in a fresh take on the typically male role. The aim is to create a story ‘that will subvert the relationship between cars and masculinity’. Smollett will play ‘a getaway driver who is coerced into working for a criminal and breaking all the rules she set out for herself.’

Misha Green, who is set to make her directorial debut with Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider sequel, is on board to direct from a script by Kat Wood. Green has previously worked with Smollett on the critically acclaimed slavery drama Underground along with HBO’s Lovecraft Country.

Let us know whether you’ll be front of the grid when this eventually finds its way to Amazon by heading to our socials channels to tell us what you think of this news @FlickeringMyth…
