Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series gets a title, teaser and premiere date

January 19, 2022 by Ricky Church

Amazon Studios has revealed the official title for its Lord of the Rings series in the very first teaser trailer. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will take viewers to the Second Age of Middle-earth for a September 2nd premiere. Watch the teaser below…

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power takes place thousands of years before the main trilogy to the creation of the Rings of Power which were given to the ruling races of Middle-earth. The teaser’s narrator recites the poem by J.R.R. Tolkien which opens his story, describing how many rings were made and the ultimate deception by Sauron as he created the One Ring to control the others. From what showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said in a statement with the teaser, viewers will see in live-action for the first time the events leading up to the creation of the Rings and Sauron’s betrayal.

“This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring – but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has already been renewed for a second season and is Amazon’s largest and most expensive production to date. Filming of season two has moved from New Zealand, the home of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and where Rings of Power’s first season was filmed, to the UK.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will star Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Maxim Baldry, Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman, Anthony Crum, Maxine Cunliffe, Trystan Gravelle, Lenny Henry, Thusitha Jayasundera, Fabian McCallum, Simon Merrells, Geoff Morrell, Peter Mullan, Lloyd Owen, Augustus Prew, Peter Tait, Alex Tarrant, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, and Sara Zwangobani.
