Aquaman makes a splash at the Chinese box office with Warner Bros. record

December 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Warner Bros. kicked off its international rollout for Aquaman today by unleashing the DC blockbuster in the Middle Kingdom, and given opening day estimates, it looks like the James Wan-directed superhero adventure is set to make a big splash in China.

The film, which stars Jason Momoa as the titular DC hero, grossed at estimated $24.6 million at the Chinese box office on Friday, setting a December record, as well as giving Warner Bros. its biggest-ever opening day in the lucrative market.

According to estimates, Aquaman is looking to net around $80 million over the weekend, which would put it well above its fellow DCEU releases Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($57.2 million), Wonder Woman ($51.8 million) and Justice League ($38.2 million).

It’s certainly a promising star for the DC movie, which is said to be tracking a $100 million domestic opening across the five-day Christmas weekend and has Warner Bros. confident enough in its success that the studio is already in early talks about a sequel.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
