Warner Bros. and DC Films’ latest DCEU blockbuster Aquaman has got off to an impressive start at the box office, with the Jason Momoa-headlined superhero adventure grossing $93.6 million in its opening weekend in China.
Aquaman set a record December opening for the market, with an 85% market share over the weekend. It’s also the biggest opening for a DC movie, with THR reporting that it is 92% ahead of Justice League and 78% ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Additionally, it has also exceeded the entire lifetime gross of Wonder Woman in the Middle Kingdom.
Given such a strong start, and the fact that it is set to roll out into the majority of international markets this week, Aquaman will likely be in a very solid position financially ahead of its North American release on December 21st. It will face some stiff competition domestically over the Christmas period from Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns, but is expected to come out on top with around $100 million over the five-day Christmas weekend.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
