Armie Hammer debunks Batman and The Invisible Man rumours, casts doubt on Call Me By Your Name sequel

March 28, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Over the past couple of months, one of the names that has cropped up frequently with regards to Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Batman vacancy is that of Armie Hammer – an actor who, coincidentally, was previously cast as the Dark Knight back in 2007 for the ultimately aborted Justice League: Mortal movie.

Last month, Hammer debunked a rumour that he was in “advanced talks” to don the cape and cowl for director Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and now he’s shot down another recent casting report which claimed he’s in contention for the lead for Blumhouse’s Universal Monsters movie The Invisible Man.

“I get asked about that, and also about Batman: ‘Are you gonna do Batman?’,” said Hammer in an interview with Vulture to promote his new movie Hotel Mumbai. I’m like, ‘No …’ They’re like, ‘Are you gonna do The Invisible Man?’ And I’m like, ‘Who is making these calls?! No!’”

Meanwhile, in the same interview, Hammer also played down talk of a sequel to 2017’s acclaimed drama Call Me By Your Name – something which he’d previously seemed very open to doing:

“Timmy’s out! I’m not sure why,” joked Hammer. “Timmy said the only way he’d do it is if they paid him $15 million. No, the truth is, there have been really loose conversations about it, but at the end of the day – I’m sort of coming around to the idea that the first one was so special for everyone who made it, and so many people who watched it felt like it really touched them, or spoke to them. And it felt like a really perfect storm of so many things, that if we do make a second one, I think we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment. I don’t know that anything will match up to the first, you know?”

“I haven’t had that conversation with them explicitly,” he continued. “But I mean, look. If we end up with an incredible script, and Timmy’s in, and Luca’s in, I’d be an asshole to say no. But at the same time, I’m like, ‘That was such a special thing, why don’t we just leave that alone?’ I’m not sure that it was ever really definitely going to happen. People just seemed so excited about it that we were like, ‘Oh, yeah, fuck it! We’ll do it, sure!”

Do you think Hammer would be a good fit for Batman or the Invisible Man? And would you like to see him reuniting with Timothee Chalamet for a sequel to Call Me By Your Name? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
