Around the World in 80 Days renewed for second season, Journey to the Centre of the Earth to be developed next

November 30, 2021 by Ricky Church

Just days after the release of the trailer for Around the World in 80 Days, PBS has already given a second season renewal for the series based on Jules Verne’s classic novel. Along with the second season, they will also begin development of another Jules Verne classic, Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Around the World in 80 Days will star David Tennant (Good Omens), Ibrahim Koma (Mother Is Wrong) and Leonie Benesch (The Crown) as the trio embark on a groundbreaking trip around the world in order to win a wager. The adaptation was created and written by Ashley Pharoah.

As part of the announcement, Slim Film + Television and Federation Entertainment, the series’ producers, also revealed they will develop a series adaptation of Journey to the Centre of the Earth, one of Verne’s most well known sci-fi adventure novels which has inspired several writers in the century and a half since it was first published. Journey sees a scientist, his nephew and their guide travel deep below the Earth’s surface and encounter new lands and prehistoric creatures. Pharoah will serve as showrunner for the series.

“We have loved working on the sequel to Around the World in 80 Days and now we are excited to also bring Ashley’s trademark blend of humour and emotion to Journey to the Centre of the Earth,” said Slim Film’s Simon Crawford Collins. Ashley has developed an ensemble of exciting new and updated characters to bring a fresh and modern take to another of Jules Verne’s beloved novels.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to embark on this thrilling new adventure with Slim and keep exploring Jules Verne’s deeply compelling and trailblazing legacy together,” said Federation’s Lionel Uzan. “Working hand-in-hand on Around the World in 80 Days has been an inspiring experience for us all, and fresh-off this first globe-trotting odyssey together, it only seemed natural that our next journey would bring us to the innermost depths of our planet and its many secrets through this ever-more relevant story.”

Following an outrageous bet, Fogg and his valet, Passepartout, take on the legendary journey of circumnavigating the globe in just 80 days, swiftly joined by aspiring journalist Abigail Fix, who seizes the chance to report on this extraordinary story.

Around the World in 80 Days will premiere on January 2nd, 2022.
