Arrival greeted with an impressive $24 million opening weekend

November 14, 2016 by admin

Going up against both Doctor Strange and Trolls in their second week, Denis Villeneuve sci-fi Arrival earned an impressive $24 million in its opening weekend.

Both Doctor Strange and Trolls had minor dips in revenue from their opening weekends, but Arrival battled well against them and could earn around $80-$85 million domestic when all is said and done. This is the largest opening for Denis Villeneuve as a director.

Arrival was acquired at Cannes for $20 million by Paramount, and cost around $47 million to make.

Internationally, Arrival added another $4.6 million from its screenings, including being the #1 film in Russia. It will open in other key markets in the coming weeks.

When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

Arrival is out now in the US and sees Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) direct a cast that includes Amy Adams (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Jeremy Renner (Captain America: Civil War), and Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).
