UPDATE: Ava DuVernay will reportedly direct Black Panther

June 22, 2015 by James Garcia

UPDATE: It looks like DuVernay is yet to sign on the dotted line, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige stating in an interview with THR that: “We’ve met with her for sure. We’ve met with a number of people for a number of movies. She has been one of them.”

Selma helmer Ava DuVernay was first rumored for the gig back in May, and now it’s (seemingly) been made official: According to MCU Exchange, DuVernay will direct Marvel’s Black Panther.

This is far from an official confirmation from the studio or even a trade report, so the news should be taken with the requisite grain of salt. However, the site assures that their sources are very solid, and that DuVernay has officially signed on and will be present for the Black Panther scenes that will be filmed for next year’s Captain America: Civil War.

At this time, no screenwriter is attached to the project, though documentary filmmaker Mark Bailey wrote a draft. Now that DuVernay is reportedly on board, the process to find someone to write the script (DuVernay likely won’t, as she has admitted to having limited knowledge of comic book lore) will likely kick into high gear.

Starring Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther will hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
