Avatar 2 may still make 2021 release date says James Cameron

May 13, 2020 by Samuel Brace

James Cameron, the director of Avatar 2, says the film may still make its 2021 release date despite the shooting delays.

The long-awaited Avatar sequels were one of many victims of the delays caused by the global health crisis. Filming was suspended but reports have surfaced that things can soon get back underway in New Zealand.

James Cameron, the director of the film, has also told Empire that Avatar 2 could still make its 2021 release date despite this hitch in the production process. Speaking about his optimism despite the difficulties, he said:

“On the bright side, New Zealand seems to have been very effective in controlling the virus and their goal is not mitigation, but eradication, which they believe that they can do with aggressive contact tracing and testing. So there’s a very good chance that our shoot might be delayed a couple of months, but we can still do it. So that’s good news. We’ve got everybody – everybody at Weta Digital and Lightstorm – working from home to the extent that that is possible. But my work is on the stage doing the virtual cameras and so on, so I can do a bit of editing, but it’s not great for me.”

Whether or not Avatar 2 will be the force that the original was will remain to be seen but those looking forward to Cameron’s next film will certainly be pleased by the director’s optimism regarding its release date.

Avatar 2 sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles from the first film, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brandan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John and CJ Jones.
