Avengers: Endgame directors tricked the cast about the film’s climactic scene

May 8, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame, apparently tricked the cast about the nature of the film’s touching closing scene.

As we all know, spoilers and leaks were on absolute shutdown for Avengers: Endgame, with the directors doing everything they could to prevent anything reaching the public before the film made it to cinemas.

This even included tricking the actual cast of the film about Tony’s funeral. Speaking to EW Radio (via ComicBook.com), Anthony Russo described how they were able to get the actors all on set without anything being leaked:

“It was an interesting day because getting all of those actors together at one level is very celebratory and joyful but it was for a difficult reason in this scene. And also, the story point in the scene was one of the biggest secrets in the movie so we had to be very, very quiet about it.”

Anthony said that this even included calling the scene something else on call sheets: “Nobody ever used the word funeral. It was always a wedding.”

Joe also added that this was primarily done to protect the actors from giving anything away on press tours: “90 percent of those actors showed up and they had no idea what they were doing. They thought they were there for the wedding, so we had to tell them ‘Here’s what’s happening in the story…’ because again, we’re just trying to protect information. People that don’t have information, it makes it easier for them to not spill the beans accidentally.”

Talk about sneaky! It certainly worked, however, and many people were surprised by Tony’s death and the climactic events of the movie. All they had to do was lie to their actors!

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
