Barbie is about to throw another super fun dance party to celebrate becoming a billion dollar film.
The Greta Gerwig-directed film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has passed the billion dollar mark at the global box office this past weekend. In its third week of release, Barbie reached $460.4 million in North America and surpassed $1 billion worldwide.
With this, Greta Gerwig becomes the first female filmmaker to direct a $1 billion grossing film without a male co-director, while Barbie is now the highest-grossing live-action film domestically from a woman, surpassing Captain Marvel and fellow Warner Bros. film Wonder Woman.
As the weekend wraps, Barbie holds the top spot at the box office, but there’s a battle for second place that heated up with some strong contenders. The industry had Oppenheimer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Meg 2: The Trench battling it out, each projected to earn just under $30 million.
