Beetlejuice to keep iconic striped suit for upcoming Tim Burton sequel

October 23, 2023 by EJ Moreno

You gotta love a ghoul who can dress well. While the memorable world and outlandish characters from 1988’s Beetlejuice stand out, the iconic costume design is equally important to that film.

Especially when considering the titular character’s black-and-white striped suit, worn to perfection by Michael Keaton. That’s why, for Beetlejuice 2, we see costume designer Colleen Atwood take her role very seriously. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Atwood notes that the suit’s return was a must-see for the sequel.

“Well, Beetlejuice has to have a striped suit. It’s like doing Alice in Wonderland needs a blue dress. How long they wear it is another thing. But Beetlejuice, that is the quintessential Beetlejuice.”

She adds that the real pushback jokingly came from Beetlejuice himself: Michael Keaton. “Strangely, it was Michael; he thinks the burgundy tux is the quintessential Beetlejuice, not the striped suit. But the world happens to disagree with him, so it’s a funny thing.”

This dedication from the cast and crew seemingly kept Tim Burton motivated throughout the production.

The filmmaker seemed to enjoy the experience, which seems rare for a Burton studio project and long-delayed sequel; Burton even said Beetlejuice 2 reminds him “why I liked making movies.”

Beetlejuice 2 has almost wrapped principal photography, with some reports saying filming was essentially a day away from completion before the actor’s strike.

The sequel sees the return of Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, alongside newcomers Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Justin Theroux.

Beetlejuice 2 is set for release on September 6th, 2024.
