Ben Affleck to explore the making of Chinatown with The Big Goodbye

August 10, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Following on from his acclaimed performance in The Way Back, Ben Affleck is set to get back behind the camera for his next directorial offering, with Deadline reporting that he is set to direct The Big Goodbye for Paramount Pictures.

Based upon Sam Wasson’s The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood, the film will explore the behind-the-scenes story of Roman Polanski’s classic 1974 film noir starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, set to the backdrop of Hollywood’s evolution from filmmaker-friendly studios to corporate giants.

The Big Goodbye will mark Affleck’s first time behind the camera since 2016’s Live By Night and he will also write the script as well as producing with Lorne Michaels (SNL). It’s unclear at this point if he has any plans to star.

Affleck will next be seen alongside his girlfriend Ana de Armas in the  psychological thriller Deep Water from director Adrian Lyne (Unfaithful), and he is currently preparing to shoot Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel alongside Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer.
