Benedict Cumberbatch on whether Sherlock will return for series 5

March 16, 2021 by Liam Waddington

After airing its seemingly last episode back in 2017, titled ‘The Final Problem‘, the future of the hugely popular BBC series Sherlock has been in doubt following busy work schedules for each member of the main cast including Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes), Martin Freeman (Dr John Watson), and Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes).

Now, in an interview with Collider, Cumberbatch was asked if Sherlock will return for a fifth series and while he personally says “never say never”, he doesn’t seem overly confident that the show will return any time soon if at all.

“I’m the worst person to ask on this because I never say never, obviously. But I don’t know. And I’m the worst person to ask because my slate’s pretty, pretty full at the moment, as is Martin [Freeman, Watson] and all the other key players involved. So, who knows? Maybe one day, if the script’s right. And I say ‘the script,’ maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now.”

Sherlock, which started back in 2010 on the BBC, ran for four series as well as a one-off 2016 special, titled ‘The Abominable Bride‘. The show saw Holmes and Watson go head-to-head with a variety of foes, most notably Sherlock’s arch-nemesis Jim Moriarty, played to perfection by Andrew Scott (His Dark Materials, Spectre).
