Bill Hader joins Power Rangers reboot as Alpha 5

September 23, 2016 by Justin Cook

Bill Hader’s exuberant and flexible voice has just landed him another role in a major upcoming motion picture, following his work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Finding Dory. According to a tweet posted recently on the film’s official Twitter account, Hader will lend his voice to the character of Alpha 5 in Dean Israelite’s 2017 Power Rangers reboot. See the post, which references the character’s catchphrase, for yourself below…

For those of you who need a bit of a refresher on your Power Rangers lore, Alpha 5 is a robot, originally introduced in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, who serves as a reliable ally to the team of teenage superheroes and assistant to Zordon (played by Bryan Cranston), the Rangers’ mentor.

Seeing as how Alpha 5 has been a source of comic relief in the Power Rangers series since its inception, Hader seems like the perfect man for the job. It has been said that this Rangers movie will be darker than previous TV versions, so one would think that Hader will provide some much-welcomed levity.

As mentioned above, Hader has not only established himself as a talented on-screen actor through his work in such movies and TV shows as Saturday Night Live, The Skeleton Twins and Trainwreck, but, especially as of recent, he has been taking on quite a few notable voice acting roles. Between this year and last, Hader’s voice could be heard in Inside Out, Sausage Party, The Angry Birds Movie and more.

Yesterday, each Power Ranger received their own character poster, which likely means that a first full-length trailer isn’t too far behind. In fact, reports suggest that the trailer, or at the very least never-before-seen footage, will be screened at New York Comic-Con next month, where Lionsgate is holding a panel for the film.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers is set for release on March 24th 2017 and will star Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, R.J. Cyler as the Blue Ranger and Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa.
