Bill Skarsgard to play Eric Draven in The Crow, Rupert Sanders directing

April 2, 2022 by Gary Collinson

It’s yet to be announced whether It star Bill Skarsgard will be reprising his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in HBO Max’s newly-announced prequel series Welcome to Derry, but the actor does look like he’s got some white face paint to look forward to in the near future as he’s become the latest name attached to the role of Eric Draven in the long-planned remake of The Crow.

Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is set to direct the new adaptation of James O’Barr’s classic comic book from a script by Zach Baylin (King Richard), while Skarsgard will be joined in the cast by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter FKA twigs (Honeyboy).

“The Crow is beautiful, dark, poetic and sometimes disturbing,” states Sanders. “It is a story of love, loss, grief and revenge. It is a great honor to revisit James O’Barr’s iconic comic and reimagine The Crow as a foreboding voice of today.”

“The Crow has long held an important space in my life,” adds producer Ed Pressman. “I believe Rupert’s vision and the script he’s developed with Zach and our great partners is going to hit home for the Crow fan base and invigorate a new generation to O’Barr’s story of eternal love and redemption. Rupert’s vision is full of pathos and I can’t wait to see The Crow in action and on the screen.”

The Crow was first adapted for the screen in 1994, with Brandon Lee portraying Eric Draven in what was tragically his final role after he was accidentally killed on set. Plans for this remake date back almost fifteen years now, having passed through the hands of directors Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Francisco Javier Gutierrez and Corin Hardy, while the list of actors linked to the title role include Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, Jack Huston, Nicholas Hoult, Jack O’Connell, Jason Momoa and even Alexander Skarsgard, Bill Skarsgard’s brother, who was reportedly offered the role back in 2013.

Will it be umpteenth time lucky with this latest version of The Crow, or do you expect it to go the way of all the other planned remakes? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
