Black Mirror’s creator just teased that every episode may be part of the same universe

September 4, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Black Mirror, originally airing on the UK Channel 4 and later picked up by Netflix, has been regarded my many as the modern Twilight Zone. Which isn’t surprising: the structure of both shows is pretty similar. There is usually some kind of twist towards the end of each, with characters sometimes learning tough — and sometimes horrifying — lessons. The biggest similarity, however, is the anthology format. Well, maybe. While the stories are vastly different, they may actually be set in the same universe says Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker. In an interview with THR, the creator hints away…

“My answer to that has changed, actually. It always used to be that it’s just a bit of fun. But then sometimes we’ve done some things where we did explicitly refer to other episodes. I think the rule is that when a character says something that explicitly refers to something else, it’s canonical. Also, they follow the same dream universe. That’s the other thing that I tend to say. There’s a line in “Hated in the Nation” where someone refers to a crime that happened in “White Bear.”

What do you think about the stories in Black Mirror being interconnected? Does that defeat the purpose of an anthology series, or do you like the fan-service? Let us know in the comments below!

Black Mirror Season 4 is expected to hit Netflix sometime before the end of 2017.
