Black Widow brings Marvel back to the big screen to the tune of $5 million at the overseas box office

July 8, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Two years since audiences were able to watch an entry into the MCU on the big-screen with 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, and fans have been flocking back to the international multiplexes to watch Scarlett Johansson’s franchise epitaph Black Widow to the tune of almost $5 million.

Estimated to snare $80-$90M at the North American box-office this weekend, Black Widow got a headstart in 11 international markets including France, Italy, and the UK, grossing an estimated $4.9M.

You can also add $1.8M to that total thanks to previews in Korea, as well as the caveat that the oft-delayed blockbuster was up against an audience of 26 million people watching the Euro 2020 semi-final between England and Denmark, where Natasha Romanoff’s swansong still managed to beat F9‘s opening day with a gross of $1.7M. She’s coming home.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) as Dreykov.
