Black Widow’s Florence Pugh found it “daunting” joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe

May 12, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Florence Pugh has enjoyed a rather meteoric rise over the past few years, with her role in 2016’s Lady Macbeth leading to acclaimed performances in the likes of Fighting with My Family, Midsommar and Little Women, the latter of which saw her nominated for her first Academy Award.

Pugh will soon be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as she takes on the role of Yelena Belova alongside Scarlett Johansson in Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, and the English actress has been chatting to Elle about how “daunting” she found it be be joining the biggest movie franchise of all time.

“When you think of Marvel, it’s big and daunting,” said Pugh. “Especially being a relatively small actor to look at it and go ‘oh, I’m going to be a part of this,’ that’s a big decision. I was scared because my Russian accent was going to be out there and I didn’t know what it sounded like. I’m also playing a character who no one’s seen before but they’ve read about her. I didn’t know whether people were going to hate me.”

Based on the promotional material released so far, there seems to be plenty of excitement surrounding Pugh’s role in Black Widow – not to mention speculation that she could be set to play a prominent part in the MCU moving forward through Phase Four and beyond.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on November 6th, 2020.
