Bloodline Season 1 Episode 11 Review

June 4, 2015 by Gary McCurry

Gary McCurry reviews the eleventh episode of Bloodline…

Normally when watching Bloodline I’ll type up a couple of notes, basically to remind me of the main points I want to include when it comes to writing the new piece. This edition, the computer was barely touched for any of the latter half.

One of the few words that was typed, simply said “holy shit.” Simple but effective eh? Let’s start with it then. The previous episode had Danny talking to his siblings and many around him, this installment has the fall out from those conversations. The last couple of episodes Bloodline has turned into the show that the pilot led us to believe it would be. We had a few episodes that many, including myself found a struggle at times to get through. Not an original or creative thing to say but I’m sure that this point wouldn’t have the same weight if it wasn’t for those moments.

Carlos (Eliezer Castro) gets caught up in it all and considering his recent past wants to stay out of trouble so lays out the story for John and leads him to the place that he and Danny have been operating out of. Suddenly they’re all different people. John shows that he is a Rayburn first then a cop as he sets an escape plan to save the family name. Twisting and turning throughout, you’re like the DEA, always a couple of steps behind.

So we know that the wedding happens due to the pilot and other flash forward scenes we get during the course of the season. That’s all well and good, you know that when Danny says he’s leaving, you know he isn’t. Bloodline takes it that bit further and when you believe you know the direction it’s heading, you discover you’re wrong. We see a cut to the family boat with Danny and his niece, Jane. During “Part 11” we are treated to the most detailed and full account of what happened to Sarah. The unicorn necklace that has come to symbolize Sarah’s life, we discover was a main cause of her death. The scene is tragic and hits in such a way that later, when Danny speaks to his representation of Sarah you get a pang in your stomach as he mutters “I want him to know what it’s like.”

Matters are out of everyone’s hands here. We just sit back and watch the unflinching drama fold out. We’re not alone in the sitting back, Kevin Rayburn is right there with us, taking his orders from John. Belle (Katie Finneran) turns up out the blue and asks her Ex-Husband about the attack he was victim of. I know they’re divorced and that but, seriously, you hear the person you once pledged to spend your life with was attacked and you don’t think, I’ll pay him a wee visit. That’s cold, Belle, real cold.

A terrific episode filled with suspense as all the Band-Aid’s covering the family’s wounds are falling apart. You get to question what you would do in the position of John, Meg and Kevin and that is a deep hole to think yourself out of. Yes please, Part 12. Yes please.
