Blue Beetle director on James Gunn’s involvement with the new DC film

August 16, 2023 by Ricky Church

With Blue Beetle arriving in theatres in just a few days, director Angel Manuel Soto has spoken on how much involvement new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran had in the new DC film’s production and final product. The answer is: very little.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Soto clarified some of his earlier comments – in which he revealed Blue Beetle will take place within the DC universe Gunn is building starting with Superman: Legacy – Gunn and Safran were happy with what Soto and his team were doing and gave them creative freedom to make it their way.

“The studio always, generally, has their hands on it,” Soto told the outlet. “As far as the essence of the story, [James Gunn and Peter Safran] liked what we were doing and they respected the vision and what we were trying to do with the film. They really did appreciate the fresh take, the nostalgic factor of how we start the film by taking the audience to see the family and fall in love with them for a prologue-of-sorts.”

Blue Beetle stars Cobra Kai lead Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes as he unexpectedly gains a powerful piece of alien technology called the Scarab, becoming a superhero in the process.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario), Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), George Lopez (Rio), Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2) and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).

Blue Beetle is set for release on August 18th.
