Blue Beetle is part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe

June 21, 2023 by EJ Moreno

As The Flash paves the way for the upcoming DC Studios reboot, we’ll soon be meeting our first hero from the relaunched DC Universe

In a new interview with Total Film, Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto has explained that the upcoming origin story aligns with what is being built at the new DC Studios, and while Superman: Legacy will officially kick things off, both Gunn and the filmmaker seem to be looking to fit Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes into that new universe.

“We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future installments of the DCU,” Soto confirms. “But we are not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”

It seems like the filmmaker hopes this character will stick around in the future. He says, “Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least. And taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga.”

DC hasn’t had the best of luck at the box office this year, with both Shazam: Fury of the Gods and The Flash tanking following the big announcement that Gunn and Safran had been appointed as co-heads of DC Studios, effectively bringing about the end of the DC Extended Universe.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Featuring in the cast of Blue Beetle are Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood), Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans MC), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario), Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), George Lopez (Rio), Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2) and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).

Blue Beetle is set for release on August 18th, 2023.
