Bluey will head to the big screen in 2027

December 17, 2024 by Ricky Church

The beloved family show Bluey is making the leap from the small screen to the big screen. Series creator Joe Brumm announced Bluey: The Movie is in development for a 2027 release.

Bluey follows the day-to-day adventures of six-year-old Bluey Heeler and her sister Bingo and mom and dad Chili and Bandit. The series premiered in 2018 in Australia and was picked up by Disney for international broadcast in 2019, followed by its premiere on the Disney+ streaming service. Since then, Bluey has become a worldwide phenomenon watched by children and adults as it not only features fun stories for kids, but tackles heavy family themes such as the difficulties parents face, pregnancy loss and other important issues.

Brumm announced the news on his blog, saying “after some time spent away from the series, working on another project, an old idea resurfaced and before I knew it, I’d written a Bluey feature script that I really love. Fast forward through a tonne of contracting and we’re about to embark on making an animated Bluey movie!”

Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, the voices of Chili and Bandit, will reprise their roles in the feature film alongside other cast members from the series.

Brumm, however, will step back from writing the TV series to focus on the feature film’s development as the writer, director and executive producer. He will be joined by Bluey co-director Richard Jeffery and will produce alongside animation producer Amber Naismith (The LEGO Movie). Also producing is Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson from Ludo Studio and Justine Flynn for BBC Studios.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ‘Bluey’ story to the big screen.”

“Over the past eight years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team of more than fifty artists and producers whose talent, dedication, and creativity have shaped ‘Bluey’ into the beloved series it is today,” said Aspinwall and Pearson. “Their work has paved the way for this incredible opportunity to expand ‘Bluey’s world onto the big screen. We’re excited to continue showing Queensland as a home for world-class talent and to share a new beautiful ‘Bluey’ story by Joe Brumm with families around the world.”

A fourth season of Bluey has not been officially greenlit, but given Brumm’s announcement that the series would continue while he worked on the feature film it stands to reason audiences will see more of Bluey’s adventures on TV while we await the film.

In the meantime, Disney+ recently released a third collection of Bluey Minisodes and all three seasons can be streamed on the platform.

Bluey: The Movie will be released in 2027.
