Boardwalk Empire movie in the works? Mark Wahlberg wants Martin Scorsese to direct

January 4, 2015 by Gavin Logan

When he’s not sharing the screen with giant robots and talking teddy bears Mark Wahlberg has been working hard behind the scenes as an active producer of such HBO shows like Boardwalk Empire, In Treatment and Entourage. Not content with Entourage getting the big screen makeover, Wahlberg has been claiming recently that a Boardwalk Empire movie is one of his future projects.

Speaking to Ralphie Aversa on his radio talk show Wahlberg said: “My next goal is to get the [Boardwalk Empire] movie made and start talking to Martin Scorsese about directing it.”

Scorsese directed the pilot episode of Boardwalk Empire which aired in 2010 and also continued to work in an executive producer role during the course of the five seasons. Terence Winter – lead writer on Boardwalk Empire – also worked with Scorsese on The Wolf of Wall Street so it’s likely that if a movie ever did make it into development then he’d be the man to scribe it.

But it might be difficult to nail Scorsese down to the project considering he will be very busy working on other projects over the next few years. Already in production is an untitled HBO Rock ‘n’ Roll documentary which he is working on with legendary Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. There’s also his next feature film called Silence (based on the novel by Shusaku Endo) which is set in 17th century Japan about two jesuit priests who are persecuted for spreading the Christian word. Liam Neeson (Taken), Andrew Garfield (TASM) and Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) are all attached to star.  A biopic of Frank Sinatra and a documentary about ex-president Bill Clinton is also on his list of future projects.

Despite his workload a movie version of Boardwalk Empire certainly sounds like something Scorsese might want to work on but it will be interesting to see if Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson will be the lead or whether they will derail from the timeline and focus on other characters.
