Brad Bird says he would like to make another hand-drawn animated film

September 20, 2015 by Tom Beasley

Brad Bird (The Incredibles) has said he would like to make another 2D animation using the hand-drawn style he used for 1999 classic The Iron Giant, which is about to return to US cinemas in a remastered form.

Speaking to Collider, Bird said that he believes hand-drawn animation is still “valid” and noted the potential to make films in another genres using the medium.

“I absolutely think that hand-drawn animation is valid and I actually hope to do one in the future with a large budget and a longer schedule than we had on The Iron Giant,” he said.

Bird also spoke about the potential for 2D hand-drawn animation as a vessel for horror cinema.

“There’s never been a horror movie in animation executed at Disney-level quality and hand-drawn,” said Bird.

“I’m not talking about CG I’m talking about hand-drawn, but it doesn’t take a lot to imagine how cool that would be.

“If you think of the scariest parts of Snow White or Pinocchio or Fantasia with Night on Bald Mountain, you could do something really scary in animation and I think if you did it right, if you did it with all the art that Spielberg did Jaws, I think that it would be an amazing experience because there’s something intuitive about when people are drawing directly with their hands.”

The Iron Giant: Signature Edition opens in the States on September 30th, with a digital release coming later in the year.
