Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson’s vast Cosmere universe has been picked up by Apple to be turned into feature films and TV series, beginning with Sanderson’s Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Sanderson had spoken with many of the big studios to adapt his works but ultimately chose Apple to make a deal with. Sanderson’s deal with Apple gives him unprecedented control over the adaptations, allowing him to write, produce, consult and have approvals over the various series in a way few authors ever get to have on adaptations on their novels.
The Cosmere universe is made up of several different series in Sanderson’s fantasy library. All take place in the same universe but are worlds apart as various magical and cosmic elements have spread from world to world, giving each one its own distinct power.

Mistborn will be turned into feature films. First published in 2006, the Mistborn trilogy follows a group of rebels set against a tyrannical empire that has ruled over the world for centuries. People of this planet are able to gain abilities through specific metals, but a rare group called Mistborn can use any and all types of metal and the powers they bring to fight against the Final Empire’s rule.
The Stormlight Archives already has a production company behind it with Blue Marble. The series began with 2014’s The Way of Kings on a world where knights use magically-infused armour and weapons powered by crystals. As the various kingdoms wage war, the secret history of their world in uncovered and the kingdoms must unite in order to prevent a deadly calamity from risking their world once again.
Sanderson has continued to write Mistborn stories set centuries after the first trilogy with a new era in development. He has also written five books in The Stormlight Archive with another five to be written, but like Mistborn the next books will begin a new arc in the series.
