Bruce Campbell says family plot line in Evil Dead Rise makes it more “excruciating”

November 24, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Following the announcement that Evil Dead Rise, the fifth instalment in the long-running horror franchise, has wrapped filming (after using some 6,500 litres of blood!), producer Bruce Campbell has further teased what fans can expect from the upcoming sequel.

In an interview with BlairWitch.De, Campbell teased that the fact that the main cast of characters in Evil Dead Rise is a family makes the entire situation that much more “excruciating.”

“This one’s dark, this one’s pretty serious. Good, strong performances,” Campbell said. “It’s a single mom who now has to deal with this book. These days it’s more about the book. That book gets around, that book is handed around, passed along, people try and get rid of it, they try to bury it or destroy it and they really can’t. So this book just keeps popping up, so really it’s just another story of what happens if this book appears in this particular group of people’s lives and how it intersects.”

He added, “This family is not the same at the end of the movie. Well, they’re gutted, the whole family is destroyed, you know, these people get possessed – brothers and sisters, sons, daughters, you know. So yeah, it’s a family affair, this one’s a family affair. They’re all related in this one. I think that makes the possession and killing your siblings – things like that, even harder. Because in the original Evil Dead, there was only one brother/sister combo, Ash and his sister Sheryl. The rest were just friends. Now this is all, they’re all related in this household. Much more excruciating.”

The synopsis for the film reads: Evil Dead Rise is set to follow two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. The film has been confirmed to build off the original trilogy, rather than the 2013 reboot, as well as moving out of the woods and into a modern-day urban setting.

The film, which is being directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground), will also star Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan as the two sisters, as well as young actors Morgan Davies (The End), Nell Fisher (Northspur), and Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence) who will play a trio of siblings, and Mia Challis as an 18-year-old girl obsessed with fashion and social media. Evil Dead Rise is set to be produced by Campbell and franchise creator Sam Raimi. It is expected to release on HBO Max sometime next year.
