Bruce Campbell teases a “very adult” Evil Dead Rise

May 19, 2022 by Liam Waddington

The Evil Dead franchise is making its long-awaited return this year not only with the recently released Evil Dead: The Game but also with the upcoming fifth instalment, Evil Dead Rise, which will premiere on the HBO Max streaming service later this year.

Now, in an interview with Bruce Campbell for the book The Art of Evil Dead: The Game from the Collector’s Edition set (via Bloody Disgusting), the actor discussed the tone of Evil Dead Rise and teased a “very adult” film.

“I’m very excited about it. It’s going to be really cool and very, very intense. It’s dark, a very adult Evil Dead movie,” Campbell teases. “I wouldn’t call it a yuck fest – it’s pretty tough, pretty hard-hitting stuff. And that’s the variation that you have within the Evil Dead franchise and within horror itself. It’s all about the filmmaker.”

From Campbell’s comments, it sounds like Evil Dead Rise will most likely have a similar tone to 2013’s Evil Dead, which was directed by Fede Alvarez, rather than featuring the violent yet humorous tones of Raimi’s films and the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead.

In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

Evil Dead Rise is directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) and stars Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), Lily Sullivan (Mental), Morgan Davies (The End), Nell Fisher (Northspur), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence) and Mia Challis (Clickbait). Franchise creator Sam Raimi and Ash star Bruce Campbell executive produce.
