Bumblebee director to helm The Six Billion Dollar Man with Mark Wahlberg

April 20, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Remember that Mark Wahlberg-headlined adaptation of the classic TV series The Six Million Dollar Man that was announced way back in 2014? Well, it seems it’s starting to move forward once again, with Variety reporting that Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee director Travis Knight has signed on to helm the film.

The Six Billion Dollar Man will see Wahlberg taking on the role of Colonel Steve Austin, an astronaut whose body is enhanced by bionic implants after being severely injured during a test flight. Rebuilt – better, stronger, faster – Austin becomes a secret agent for the U.S. Office of Scientic Intelligence (OSI).

The project was originally announced as a vehicle for Wahlberg and his regular director Peter Berg, although the latter dropped out of the project and was originally replaced by Damian Szifron (Wild Tales) before The Weinstein Company sold the rights to Warner Bros. in late 2017.

Knight, the CEO of stop-motion animation studio LAIKA, made his live-action debut with last year’s Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.
